The poetic, impressionistic text relates both the concrete details and imaginative flights of a girl and her grandma on a camping trip together. Illustrations done in pastels match the story's tone, evoking the wonder and magic of the experience. Copyright 1998 Horn Book Guide Reviews

~ In a text as spare as haiku, Bauer (Am I Blue, 1994, etc.) tells of a camping trip that includes roasting hot dogs, catching a fish (and letting it go), and taking in the natural wonder of their surroundings. There is an intensity of shared experience in the writing, of an acknowledgement and celebration of nature. The pace is careful, leisurely; both campers revel in the hushed moments and quiet joys that are a part of such trips. Garns's paintings capture spectacular natural light, and have a comfortable familiarity of details; words and text encourage an attentive reading and a savoring of each page. Though hardly Newbery Honor author Bauer's (On My Honor; Ghost Eye) most striking work, this affectionate portrait of a girl and her grandmother is quietly moving. The narrator and Grandma hike into the woods, fish from a canoe at sunset and snuggle into their sleeping bags in a tent. When day breaks, they climb back into the canoe while the girl muses on a future time, when she will be the guiding light on a similar expedition: "Soon I'll be taller, stronger. I'll sing away the bears when we hike in the woods. I'll build the fire and paddle the canoe." The text may occasionally baffle young readers ("A heron wings over our heads. Great blue shadow. Pterodactyl"). For the most part, Garns's (Gonna Sing My Head Off!) grainy, shadow-filled art accentuates the contemplative quality of Bauer's story. Yet several spreads-e.g., of a splendid lakeside sunset-blaze with brilliant color. Ages 4-8. (Apr.) Copyright 1995 Cahners Business Information.

PreS-Gr 2?A camping trip that captures the spirit of nature and a loving relationship. Told from a granddaughter's perspective, the narrator's voice speaks in childlike words and thoughts. Even so, elegant, spare language makes use of well-chosen images to paint the environment and the youngster's feelings about it: ``A heron wings over our heads. Great blue shadow. Pterodactyl.'' The two spend a night in sleeping bags, and ``In the morning I pop my head out of the tent. The moon floats low in the bluing sky like a balloon left from a night party.'' Garns's full-color, realistic illustrations evoke the setting masterfully, with light changing to reflect the time of day. Outstanding composition and use of light and shadow make each double-page spread a viewing pleasure, and the text is placed effectively over the pictures. Reminiscent of Uri Shulevitz's Dawn (Farrar, 1974) for its mood and Amy Hest's Rosie's Fishing Expedition (Candlewick, 1994) for its depiction of familial ties, When I Go Camping stands out as a most memorable experience. Best for story time, but fine for independent readers as well.?Carolyn Noah, Central Mass. Regional Library System, Worcester, MA
